The Power of Small Steps

The Power Of Small Steps Makes Productivity Easy

If only it was easier to feel and perform your best

Tired and wired, you rehearse what to say to at tomorrow’s meeting. The CE will be visiting, and every GM is meant to present on key projects and potential cost savings. Then your brain switches over to your ever-growing to-do list.

It’s 3 am. Will you ever fall asleep? Even if you do manage to fall asleep, you’ll only get a few hours of rest before your alarm sounds for the next school battle. You really should get to the gym as well. You haven’t been for weeks. Why did you even sign up in the first place? You feel like a failure for not going. If only you had more discipline.

You feel anxious gazing at the clock ticking by. Maybe some deep breathing will help?

Argh!!! You know your concentration and focus will be shot tomorrow if you don’t go to sleep now. If you’re not on top of your game, who knows what the CE and other GMs will think. Sigh… no doubt you’ll snap at the kids and your team as well. You hate feeling like an ogre, but why can’t people just do what they’re supposed to do.

Yes, you’ll get a triple shot flat white from a café on the way in. You’ll need the extra kick to help you get through the day. Maybe a choc chip muffin too? What’s the likelihood you’ll have a chance to eat breakfast before you rush the kids out the door? How great would a glass of wine be?

You know your productivity and performance have dropped at work recently. Your Manager has even made a few passing remarks. Easy for them to say, they have an EA who does everything; they probably have a house cleaner too, and a personal chef too.

Hmmm… What to do? You know you’ll be so much more productive if only you had better habits. You’ve heard about these intensive well-being reset retreats. Maybe that’s what you need? But then when would you get away? You can’t just pack up and leave; you have work and home commitments. Can you imagine how big your to-do list would be when you got back? Sigh….

The alarm clock sounds, you get out of bed feeling exhausted and dreading the day ahead. You know there’s no way you can perform your best when you feel like this. If only it was easier to make better habits.

No single instance will transform you

In a world fixated on overnight success stories, grand gestures and intensive wellbeing reset retreats, it’s easy to overlook the profound impact of small, consistent actions.

As James Clear, author of best seller “Atomic Habits,” wisely said:

“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.” – James Clear

This sentiment underscores the transformative power of daily habits—the small steps that, when done consistently, can lead to lasting change and personal growth.

Why starting small matters for lasting change

B.J Fogg, the renowned behaviour scientist behind “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything“, emphasizes the importance of starting small. The Fogg Behaviour Model, the key for understanding behaviour, shares the three elements that are need to occur at the same time for behaviour to happen.

Behaviour happens when motivation, ability and prompt occur at the same time.

Big changes often lead to failure due to dwindling motivation. It requires more motivation to do big things because they take more resource. When you consider that many of us fear failure, sometimes we’d prefer not to even try, rather than risk failure. Real or perceived inability to carry out a behaviour can result in failure to start. Breaking down goals into manageable steps increases the likelihood of success. No matter what you’re trying to do, tiny actions create momentum and pave the way for bigger changes over time.

Consistency creates momentum

The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy further reinforces the idea that consistent, incremental actions yield significant results over time.

“Small, Smart Choices + Consistency + Time = RADICAL DIFFERENCE.”

Just as compound interest grows wealth over time, consistent habits compound to improve various aspects of our lives. Each small step may seem insignificant on its own, but when compounded daily, they create a powerful momentum that propels us toward our desired outcomes over time.

To quote New Zealand’s Rachel Hunter from a nostalgic Pantene commercial as she flicks her luscious locks – “It won’t happen overnight but it will happen”
